   The Performing Arts Department offers 5 band classes with over 200wind and percussion players in the program.  At the Lower School level(Grade 6), students are given the opportunity to play some wind instruments -flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone and tuba. Students are taught the techniques of playing these instruments as well asreading musical notation.  Ear training is taught as the students mustlearn to hear the correct pitches before trying to reproduce them on theirinstruments..

  The class is divided into brass and woodwind sections, taught by 2 ofthe band teachers meeting 3 times per week.  Specialists are sometimesbrought in to work with small groups of students, reinforcing techniquesspecific to each instrument.  Students enjoy individual attention within thegroup setting.  Every Friday, both groups combine for a full ensembleexperience.

    A presentation is shared with families in December, and thefirst formal performance will be held in May with the Upper School's beginning,intermediate and high school groups.Skills developed at this level lay the foundation for advancement into theUpper School Band program.  If students do exceptionally well, they may beselected to play in Band 2 and may also be invited to play with o
